Actually, hazing is illegal and would get you a general discharge, maybe even prison.  Murder, however, guarantees you a a prison sentence in Fort Levenworth and a dishonorable discharge if you ever get out.  But like everything under the law, it is debatable whether somebody is hazing or just messing with you, because non-Asian uneducated working class people tend to behave very aggressively towards one another, and the Army has a lot of legal ways to mess with you, which civilians would consider "bullying" (I will address these legal ways in my next paragraph).

One of my Army buddies got a general discharge because he was extremely rebellious.  He just hated the Army and would backtalk everybody.  That and he was an alcoholic.  We became best pals because we both hated the Army, lol.  But I usually picked my battles better.  He was just too American to fit in the Army.  What he failed to realize about the Army is that the Army is essentially a feudal institution instead of a democratic one, so the NCOs and officers are essentially petty kings, and all these American ideals about freedom and equality do not apply.  For example, in the civilian world, the worst your boss can do to you is to fire you.  And on your way out, you can give them a piece of your mind.  In the military, they got something better than firing you.  They can take you outside and make you exercise until you die, and / or they can make you do manual labor for 4 hours after your 6 to 5 work everyday for months.  And then search your room every night for "cleanliness," tossing your room upside down.  And then make you report to staff duty every hour just to make sure that "you do not commit suicide," but in actuality to make sure that you do not sleep.  And if you tell them to go fuck themselves, then they can send you to a military prison for disobedience and disrespect of superior officers.  Oh, yeah, and while they are messing with you, they can dock all your pay for all those months you are being punished.  It is basically modern-day slavery.  The "bad" discharges are basically what they would do to you after they are done fucking with you.

But this is at least an improvement over the previous generations, when it was actually legal to beat the crap out of the junior enlisted.

And military prison is not some soft civilian prison where you get Cable TV, 3 hots and a soft bed, and chillin' with all your homies lifting weights.  Just look at what is happening to Bradley Manning, the alleged Wikileaker:  He is kept in isolation, stripped to his underwear in the cold Missouri winter, and soldiers would come in and wake him up and mess with him all the time.  And I am assuming they can PT him to death if they feel like it.  You do not want to go to a military prison.

Exactly.  When my NCOs were invading my privacy and going through all of my drawers and pawing all of my belongings, I thought to myself, who did I murder to be treated like a criminal?  I basically lived in a cell where my NCOs could come in at will, go through my belongings, and then tell me how to organize them and what to throw away.  If this is how the average soldier is treated, how will they treat someone whom they actively want to fuck with?  When a civilian signs on the dotted line, he has more or less forfeited his citizenship and subjected himself to martial law.

And like Manning, I was part of Army Intelligence and had access to Top Secret information.  But I would never have done what he did because I did not want to spend the rest of my life in a military prison, under the thumbs of such douchebags.

Thank you for your kind words, Sir_Humps.  And dude, you have no idea.  The number one issue facing soldiers while I was still in the Army was suicide.  The number of suicides were reaching new record year after year.  And when soldiers are not killing themselves in record numbers, they are committing other violent crimes(and I consider suicide a violent crime against the self), like rape and assault.  And then there are the DUIs.  Soldiers would get so drunk that they crash to death.  For instance, on some large bases, like Fort Hood in Texas, they could not get through the week without some soldier crashing to death.  They got some real dummies in the Army (by that I mean the death by DUI).

And every year I would go through these lectures about how to spot potential suicides, such as when somebody is giving away all of his belongings, and / or if somebody keeps talking about committing suicide or is completely miserable, but all of a sudden he is happy as a jay bird.  Then you know he is about to do it because he has made the decision to do it, hence the happiness.  In fact, while I was going through my Basic Training, this battle buddy of mine told me that by the same date next year, he would have committed suicide, and he did not care if I go inform on him.  And I ain't no snitch, lol.  So I am not sure if that dude is still alive anymore.

And this one time my father got sick, and I told my NCO that I needed to go home and help my father move, since he could no longer work and had to move into a smaller place.  But apparently he did not like my tone or the way I made my request (I basically said, "Sergeant, I need to go home and help my father move).  But apparently that was not deferential enough because I did not request in a question form and did not grovel enough, as in "Sergeant, may / can I please go home so I can help my father move, mass'r," he started screaming at me about how I am the "specialist" (rank) and he is the NCO, and how I need to check my attitude, etc, etc.  And I did not get to go home for another year until I had a new NCO.  And when I finally got to go home, after one year of being fucked with, my new NCO was so worried about me that he kept asking me if I was alright.  And I knew what he was getting at, and I basically told him straight up, I am not going to kill myself, because if I am going to kill myself, I would have done it a long time ago, when I was still a poor student with no money and no job.  Now that I have savings and a profitable business, I am not going to kill myself over the likes of the Army.  And he would call me everyday to check up on me.  But he was a good guy, though, one of the few NCOs whom I would just gripe openly about the Army.  But other soldiers were probably not so fortunate.  Because I had a very important job, and I was not expendable, they could not truly mess with me for fear of interfering with the mission (they could mess with my Leave and sweat and threaten me over little things, but they did not put me through extra labor, sleep deprivation, and wage garnishment).  And I did have a real attitude problem in my last year, but I just did not care anymore, because I realized they needed me more than I needed them, and I was ready to accept a General Discharge just to get out  and get on with my business without all the Army stress and bullshit..

And the one thing I hate the most about the Army is the general lack of respect.  One time this NCO called out the entire company to the bleachers, just to tell us that "we ain't hot shit."  And that the Army can easily replace us because of the recession.  Well, considering that we are the top 5% in terms of IQ, and that we all have TS Security Clearance and have important jobs working for the NSA, I would say we are hot shit.  And the funny thing is that, they treated us so badly that my entire section did not reup (renew the contract), and now they have a bunch of civilians doing our old jobs, for twice or three times the salary (the Army grossly underpays us).  Hot shit, indeed.  Lol(z) ;p :)) !!!  I always love a good schadenfreude like everybody else, Lol(z) ;p :)) !!!

however, I have to say the "suicides" of Danny Chen and Harry Lew wasn't "merely" over extra PT, but totally racially motivated.   I can't imagine why they wanted to be frontline infantry - since you got the smarts to at least do some high-tech skills that can't be easily replaced with canon fodder.

Oh, totally. I would never say that their suicides were not racially motivated. If I have to choose between the testimonies of an Asian brother and some white guy over the issue of racism, I will always believe the bro, because I know how white people are. My point was that the Army treats people so badly, that suicide is the biggest problem in the military. And being Asian just adds to the problem of suicide.

And Danny Chen was totally a victim of racism. And the crazy thing is that he was part of the 25th ID, which is partially stationed in the same base I used to live in (Schofield Barracks, Hawaii), and I actually got to know some of these 25th ID infantrymen, who did not seem all that bad. But I guess living in Asian-dominated Hawaii had more or less mellowed them. Unfortunately, Danny Chen was assigned to the 25th ID in Alaska, full of Sarah Palin-type white people. If he had been assigned to Hawaii, he might had had some fun. In fact, the reason I got to know some of these infantrymen was because a Chinese American friend of mine was assigned to the 25th ID. But he was not an infantryman. He was the supplier and armorer. In other words, a skilled laborer. So they looked out for him in Iraq and made sure he stayed alive, lol. And they would barge into his room over the weekend and force him to go out and have fun with them, lol. His last name was also Chen, btw.

But the issue of Harry Lew was more problematic, because apparently it was documented that he kept falling asleep on guard duties, which would totally get you an ass-whooping from your battle buddies, because you are putting their lives in danger. If I was a combat NCO in Helmand, and someone under my command fell asleep on guard duty on a consistent basis, then I would beat his ass too. But a beating would constitute hazing, so that is illegal. Nevertheless, you will be hard-pressed to find a military jury who will sympathize with the sleeper. I am not saying those douchebag Marines were not racist, but Harry Lew did give them an excuse to fuck with him. And believe me, when you give your NCO an excuse to mess with you, he will totally enjoy that shit.
