They fight back because it's all they have. That little store is usually their business and it is all they have in their life. It is their life saving, their work, their sweat, their blood, their toil, their achievement. It is more than just a store to them, it is an extension of their very being and existence and they will defend that to the end. If they lose that, they lose everything.
Up keeping that business is hard and they are in many ways worn out and fed up but continue to earn enough to live because they have little other choice so it's understandable if some robber comes they have no fear and if anything might even snap at the robber and unleash their righteous frustrations.
