Re: Study: Asian Actors on TV Underrepresented (Score: 1) by davidals on Thursday, September 22 @ 21:41:42 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | Best of luck to you with the film. I think this is exactly part of the solution (protest is the other part).
I'm African-American, and though we are well represented, I often groan at the way in which we are represented - I think TV is better than film for us, but I think the work of indie filmmakers is critical to increasing visibility and increasing the variety of representations out there - I've seen a number of Latino and Asian-American indie films, and see a model that I think more African-American filmmakers should move towards.
As for protest; the historical 'Amos & Andy' protests did initiate a process of change in how African-Americans were portrayed on TV - that process (after all this time) continues, but in that the initial protests were effective, as were the protests directed at MTV in their early days, when they wouldn't broadcast videos by African-American artists. If Asian-Americans are underrepresented or misrepresented, back it up with letter writing or petitions - let the networks know that they are overlooking a significant part of this country, and that will not be tolerated. |
