Re: Asians at UC Berkeley (Score: 1) by GeoffDB on Sunday, August 21 @ 18:15:34 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | On the contrary, my opinions are based on American history, demographics, social science findings and Supreme Court rulings. Unlike my "learned" opponent, I actually read news reports and get historical facts correct before I lodge my arguments.
It was Chief Justice Warren Burger who remonstrated during the 1978 UC Davis v. Bakke case why Asians were included in college Affirmative Action programs. He wanted to know what racism in American history and court decisions caused Asian-Americans to be deprived of equal acess to education the same way that African-Americans were deprived. The attorney arguing for UC Davis pointed out that Asians had been subjected to racism. The Chief Justiced pressed on and wanted to know how that racism caused them not to be successful in medical and engineering fields. I speculate that was one of the reasons why UC Davis' Affirmative Action program was struck down.
So you see, Chief Justice Warren Burger was actually indifferent towards Affirmative Action then the same way that Asian-Americans criticize Affirmative Action now.
Different forms of discrimmination require different remedies to correct them.
Most of the arguments against Affirmative Action are racist and onery. White people and Asian-Americans do not want to solve racial conflict. The Asians in the US have already chosen their team. They want to play for the "winning" team - the white man.
I find the arguments against Affirmative Action are largely made by white and Asian people who are already in a good enough position to have equal access to higher education. These same people accuse African-Americans of taking something from them. But how can this be when American history clearly shows an indifference specifically directed at black people because of our skin color?
What complicates racism in this country and what causes racial conflict to elongate in the US is the continued purposeful exclusion of the black man which is encouraged by the white man and whatever loyal agents who take his side. It's nothing less than indifference. |
