Re: All too familiar (Score: 1) by Byron on Tuesday, October 22 @ 14:47:47 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | Sir,
You are correct in stating that slavery existed before whites created it. Indeed, slavery is quite universal around the world. I didn't dispute the issue of slavery, nor do I dispute it now. Prejudice was also universal. Class differences and national differences have existed as long as man.
However, racism--that is, prejudice based on race--was created by whites. It's a historical fact. In Egypt, everyone was the same color. In the Indian caste system, everyone was also the same color--the prejudice was based on class, not race. It wasn't until white people started classifying non-whites (read Gobineau, Linnaeus, etc.) and began a systematic movement to disenfranchise the colored people of the world that racism began. It was whites who started talking about how some races were smarter, some were more athletic, etc. And it was whites who first started using these theories to commit genocide and oppression.
And I'm not saying this because I'm anti-white (I'm not). It's just historical fact. White people created racism, and we minorities continue to suffer from it.
You say that "racism will not stop, until people just shut up about it," but this is obviously not the case. You describe racism as something that's in the past, but this is also clearly not the case. We minorities (especially us Asians) have always been silent, but has it helped us? You still see Asians today being beaten with baseball bats, shut out from certain professions, and denigrated by a vicious media. You see Native Indians stuck on a reservation without access to education. You see blacks continue to fall victim to lynchings. You see Arabs being shot down for wearing their native garb. Mostly at the hands of whites. Talking about it does get people angry, but why shouldn't we be angry? If your son were to commit some of these racial crimes that we minorities have almost come to regard as a normal part of life, would you be angry? Why not try to correct some of these racist attitudes so that racism stops?
I'm just trying to show that our society is not free from racism. You are free to help rid America of this racist disease, or you can do nothing. It's really up to you. I myself prefer to speak up. |
