Re: Propaganda vs. Real Life in America vs. Terrible Reasoning (Score: 1) by DalaiWu on Saturday, July 31 @ 01:49:48 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | You apparently do not understand what I am saying. There is a constant complaint on this site regarding prejudice in the media and I totally agree. I do not take Western media at face value. Nor do I take the Chinese media at face value either. However, I am Chinese, and I am not a Westerner. If I had to choose whose propaganda to believe, I would not have to think very long. I will not allow myself to be affected by their media.
Secondly, not taking these publications at face value is not the same as choosing to read or not to read what they propagandize. These two concepts are not one in the same. I never said that I did not read them; I just said that I would not waste my time reading about a subject that I know to be false from a Chinese POV—and that is directly from primary sources. I know exactly why Beijing allows this field of study to be practiced in the country. Consider that it is much cheaper to re-educate malfeasants than it is to put them through therapy. It is also much more effective as well. If life is only worth the price of a bullet—which the malfeasants family pays for by the way—why pay for therapy? Basically, it is Beijing's way or the highway. I do not claim to necessarily support this “means to an end” philosophy, but it is what it is. And if I practice propaganda as you say that I do, and it is Chinese in nature, then by definition, it is also Asian, not Western; I can certainly live with that. This reasoning is neither dishonest nor hypocritical. I never said that propaganda as it is practiced is correct; just that Western propaganda as it relates to Chinese and Asians in general should be unacceptable to us all. Until racial bias in the media is eradicated, I will always view their publications and sources thereof with extreme caution and skepticism. I would advise any person of color to do the same. Remember, it was the NY Times that screwed Wen Ho Lee.
Lastly, there are very few "world organizations" that are not extremely bias; and they are always severely skewed from a Western POV. And the WHO is definitely one of them. |
