yeah i just got back from shanghai and it honestly opened my eyes.

Economically the US is that much more attractive then China. The average yearly income for a person in China is 3000 rmb. Now the exchange rate for US to RenMinBi was 8.26 when I left...and it doesn't change that much. So thats about 363 US dollars a year. I mean...thats shitty. These women are making alot of money (atleast in their eyes) for something that is common place in China. Prostitution in China is huge. It's always been that way. Everywhere I went, I was approached by prostitutes. Ok, that is an exaggeration, but it is a really big problem in China and I was definitely approached on the streets more than once. If I was white, then I'd definitely be approached more often. Not because white ppl are always looking for prostitutes...but chances are if you are white and in China, you are probably an ex-pat from France, Germany, UK, America, with alot of cash. I think you can get a prostitue for about 100 rmb. Not a good one, but still. thats alittle more then 10 US dollars. Thats just economics.

Now socially, China made me realize I was extremely American. Confucian beliefs are still deeply rooted into Mainland China culture. When doing anything you have to always think about possibly making you or other losing face. You don't want to ruin your guanxi (connections) so you always have to think about that even if you don't think its logical (logical in an american sense...because if you are a native chinese, chances are...thinking about guanxi and face is very logical) Thinks are just done...really differently and you will probably find that you love America alot more then you thought you did.

Alright, sorry that was so long, but honestly, a lot of people bash on America, and yes I became alittle disillusioned when all the ideals that tv fed me didn't come through. But honestly, with hard work from ppl that come to this site, spreading the word, and making Asian Americans think, I think we can change our situation here for the better. China has a long way till they start recognizing some human rights. I mean...CNN would regularly blackout totally (because of censoring) and June 4th (Tianammen Square) is a taboo subject that NO ONE in mainland China talks about...openly. It really isn't an atmosphere conducive to anything but money making...and partying.

I don't want to scare anyone about China, but thats some of the more negative aspects about it that teach you that freedom of speech...yeah...that is a lot nicer then i thought it was...or women really do have a higher standing in America then I thought they did. Anyway, with that said, my Shanghai trip was amazing and most of my opinions of China are of Hangzhou and Shanghai so take what you want of my opinion and ideas. But seeing as how Shanghai is the most modernized city in China, I can easily say China has a long way to go, politically, economically, and socially.
