Re: Societal Acceptance of Anti-Asian Sentiment (Score: 1) by jpma on Monday, June 21 @ 02:13:37 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | I'm not sure about that. If you notice these days it is the black community that always makes it a "issue" for their young ones to finish school and go on to college. They are trying at least. Especially these days. Maybe it is yet to be seen what percentage of population actually do become succesful in higher education, but listen to blacks in the media, u'll always here something about going to school. I bet you the black minority wished they were referred to as the "Model Minority".
And here we are always complaining about it and how "it restricts us or creates undo pressure on those of us who are not the "model minorities". Like I said before those who are "Model Minority" only bring the rest of us up (but I guess it's true some are bananas or coconuts) but still they serve as good examples.
Then you have Shaq of the LA Lakers talking about studying Law enforcement, or Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors making it a point to attend his graduation during the playoffs a couple of years back.. You don't think in a subtle way these super star millionaires are not sending a powerful message. I even just heard Shaq saying sometthing about having a degree to the media.
"Yeah, that's being successful. Too bad most blacks don't have the same aspirations, perserverance, or capabilities. "
That's a powerfully racist statement. look how many extremely sucessful people that happen to be black are in the spotlight. Without " aspirations, perserverance, or capabilities" , how would they have gotten there.
Dr. Condalieza Rice, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Shaq, Michael Irving, Babyface, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr.,.......and on and on. All these people had "aspirations, perserverance, and capabilities." Look at Magic Johnson, super star athlete who is now a super star business person. Jay-Z is reportedly worth 400 million. Oprah is one of most if not the most powerful woman in Hollywood. Stereotypes suck when applied to any race. |
