Re: Horseplay or Assault at Ithaca High? (Score: 1)

Well, I think that the author does the best job she can with the facts. We have an apparently Asian American police chief calling it "mutual horseplay" and a apparent "black leader" saying that he doesn't know if it was ethnically motivated but that it would be bad if it was. the victim himself doesn't even say that it was or was not racially motivated I think.

I think that the story however does get at one of the everyday annoyances that all minorities in America deal with: Does a negative incident with a person of a different race reflect underlying racism on the other person's part or just a bad day? We've all encountered openly bigoted people, but most of the time people don't loudly advertise their biases, they kind of act out in a more passive aggressive manner. Was the kitchen really swamped with orders, or does the waitress not like waiting on minorities and therefore put your order in last? Is the bank teller all rude and cranky because he hates Asian people or was he just up all night having a shouting match with his girlfriend? Does she really have a boyfriend or did she shoot me down cuz I'm Asian or Black or Latino or whatever?

I'm an optimist, I'm willing to believe that in 90% of situations a negative experience with a person doesn't reflec any underlying bias, but there is always that 10% and you never know where it is and when it's gonna happen. So it puts me on edge all the time.

Agreed. No one seems to be saying anything about whether race was a factor. It's just a regular incident until anyone says otherwise.
