Thank you for sharing your impressions of Hong Kong. I have never been there. The only part of Asia that I have been to is Taiwan. But of course you and I don't think of Chinese as being shifty or shady.
However, Glass isn't writing for an audience that has been to China or an audience that has taken Asian American studies courses. He's assuming that his audience will take his word, experiences, and perceptions for granted. (And it doesn't even sound as though he himself has been to Asia.)
But I think that you're missing my point here, which is that he is confusing Asian Americans with Asians. He is perpetuating stereotypes that are not true of either community. The buyer studies in California, and her family is most likely in the Washington DC metropolitan area, if they are looking over the apartment for her. That is part of what I most resent - that Glass denies her and her family the possibility of being American.
