Minh,

I think Japanese Americans and Japanese take exception to the term "Jap" regardless of whom it referrs. Just the same, It could be arguable that someone says they don't like Chinks, but really, they only mean the commie kind from years 1957-1958... Or that "Nigger" only referrs to ghetto black people.

Makes no sense to me.

Much in the same way that America has decided to take and create its own history an culture - such have the Koreans and Japanese and the rest. Chinese influenced - sure, but they are independent to themselves, and I'm sure Koreans and Japanese wouldn't care to be called Chinese. The interesting thing about China as well is that it is a mistake to lump it into one distinct culture. So much of China's history has been about different belief systems and culture clashing that really- even China itself cannot decide upon what its culture really is. Western Chinese in Xinjiang live and believe quite differently than South-Western Chinese and so on. Further- to keep buying into Chinese history and culture is to also assume Tibet and Nepal to fall into that "Chinese Culture" umbrella - as they are now, according to the Chinese Government, part of China. I don't think they buy that, and if you meet people from there- they are quite different as well.

If you don't believe that there is a need for "Asian America" then what the hell are you doing on this site anyway?
