What a great post.

It's bad enough when the white majority can't discern the difference between Asian and Asian-American. It's galling when we AAs can't tell the difference and confuse the two.

The Asian-American experience will be/should be probably an amalgam of cultrual sensibilities from various "home countries" - not just China - as well as the shared experiences we live daily as the non-white citizens of this country.

When Asian-Americans confuse Asians and AAs (e.g., blaming Japanese-Americans for stuff Japan does or saying that Filipina-Americans are all Navy whores b/c they once visited Subic Bay) it just pisses me off.

If we exect whites NOT to come right up to us and say "ni hao" as a pick-up line, would be nice if we wouldn't confuse Asians and AAs as well.

My dos centavos.

I didn't mean Chinese culture for Asian American but for Chinese American. But you know what, Ask yourself where did much of Japanese, Viet, and Korean culture come from. As for Phillipines I lived there for a year. Alot of Chinese influence their too. Remember the man who fought Spain was half Chinese. But all I am saying is that no matter where you are if you want asian americans to identify closer with american than asia that is fine with me. But remember at the turn of the century while all the laws were to screw the Chinese and Koreans, the Japanese were less affected since the Japanese government at the time put their foot done. And don't you think the sucess of Japan has given Japanese American a better image in the eyes of the Whites as compared to Viets let say.
