My point is, pop culture is not culture. If you know CYF, big fuckin deal. Do you know Confucius, Mao, Musashi, Tokugawa, Yamamoto. Every Chinese person in Vietnam knows Confucius. Every Japanese in China knows Tokugawa. How Many chinese in America know Liu Pang. Do you?
As far as understanding white people go, where do you want me to start. Plato, Virgil, Camus, Twain, Lincoln. Read the Bible several times (hate it). Read Thomas Gospels (left out of Bible, but love it). I can talk to you about Rome, Mesopotamia, you name it. I went to Marin for community college, my dad worked as a dishwasher when we first got to America in the Marina district (all white). I went to a very very very diverse elementary school (20% of each group). My best friend was white growing up. My heros, in some respect is Alexander Hamilton. I also love Joe Montana and Bill Clinton. All my professors are basically white. I love some of the things Whites have given the world. What I fail to see is what Asian -American culture to be. YOu know what Black Culture is (its more than just hip hop), and I hate Asian-America because they failed to have an identity. Off all the minorities in America, Chinese culture was never stripped from us like AFrican culture was taken from Blacks. Chinese culture is the longest contiguous culture in the world. YEt most chinese in america know nothing about it. It should be in the building block for "asian-american" culture instead it is thrown away (especially in the burbs). Plus many asian-american hate China and some call themselves "Taiwanese." Yet they take no time in reading up on the history of China, how asians got to this country, how they were and are treated in this country. As Taiwan goes, how many "taiwanese" have read the "Republic of China" ( that is a country Taiwan is just one island in that country) Constitution. Or know that if your last name is lee, wang, shih, your family is from China, if not 50years ago, than 300years ago. Native "Taiwanese", what the people in Taiwan call the "Hill People" are dark skin polynesians that the Chinese who now occupied Taiwan island got rid off. Similiar to what the Whites did to the Native Americans. Asian-American piss me off cause they don't even know their own history. When Bill Parcel said those remarks about Japs, I had no problem with that. During the first half of the century and still today, Japs f**china and all of asia ( the people of Northern China still suffers from Black Death), because those Japs killed 20-30 million chinese over a 20 year peroid. Why should I call Japs as my "Asian-American" community. Especially since the Japanese won't even admitt to the WWII atrocities. So there is my passion. Before you claim an identity, you know must know where you come from. I live in America, I know what this place is all about and how it has affected me. Yet I have not forgot how China has affected my identity. Though I was born in Vietnam and immigrated to America. My grandfather was chinese. My ancestory is Chinese. I was born a Chinese Person and will die a Chinse Ghost. (old Chinese saying). Do you understand where I am comming from. And if you ever have a chance to read up on Chinese history, you will know how "Chinese is Defined." It is by your decorum and manners and culture that define who you are. China was a cultural empire not a geographical empire until 1950s. Those who followed Chinese culture were called "Chinese" depsite their ancestry. Those who don't follow Chinese culture were not Chinese, irregardless if their parents were. So if you don't know your history and culture, don't call yourself "chinese-american". Call yourself american or white cause you don't afford the respect the Chinese culture deserves. PS I don't mean you as in you I you as in people. |
