Re: Postcard from Taiwan (Score: 1) by aelward on Thursday, June 17 @ 12:19:46 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.aznhealth.com | I would also add that being ABC actually confers a lot of benefits if you know how to look for them.
Many Taiwanese women mistakenly see ABCs as having all the personality benefits of an American but still wrapped in a Chinese-looking package. My ABC friends and I were quite successful in the dating game with locals.
If you avoid the buxibans, you can find profitable jobs tutoring or teaching English. One of my CBC friends worked for a private girls' school (talk about having fox guard the sheep :P ) and was pulling in $40 an hour. I was tutoring some American School kids for $30 an hour.
Most of it is knowing how to approach things, how to assimilate when needed (and you can assimilate better there than in the US because humans trust their eyes so much) and when to stand out when needed.
A White person in Asia cannot do that and gets the negatives with the positives -- blatant racism and easier benefits. And while the end up as grumpy curmudgeons who hate the place they live in, we ABCs can keep it real and separate the experience from our own identity if need be. |
