I love your emotion in this issue - but don't lump us 'burb kids into the honkoid class. I grew up in the whyte part of the bay area- and had nary an Asian neighbor. I believe my high school had about 25 Asians out of 1500 (and I knew them all). As a result - I can out whyte whyte people and I can out chink Asian people. I love my NASCAR, Pro-Wrestling and Monster Trucks, and I will also cuss you out in three dialects of Chinese if need be. - THAT- is what Asian American culture means to me.

As I live in America, I need to know its culture and understand it. I don't have to like it or live it - but understanding it makes the world an easier place to deal with. If you wanna know why whyte people act the way they do, study them. Study their history - it will teach you a lot... That said- also be sure to study the cultures of those around you as well.... being both of us in California - that really means Mexican/Latino/Chicano culture in addition to a myriad of others in this area.

How does Asian fit into this? Well, I can't change the skin I live in, and I won't. As such, I also gotta know how to deal with it and how to blend in and use it at the same time. For me- what being Asian American means is that I am equally comfortable in Chinatown as I am in the Tenderloin, as I am in Mission, as I am in the Marina (with whyte people). It also means that I can idolize my pop heros like Elvis, Rudy Ray Moore and CYF. Just like it is a waste to go to another country and not experience its culture- such as it as well not to experience (not like- experience) the culture of your own country.
