Re: Chinese subtleties (Score: 1) by jpma on Thursday, June 17 @ 00:38:13 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | "Yes, I do think that the title was truly meant to conjure up such images" -
I guess after a few years in Hong Kong I lived amongst the Chinese, I have a hard time conjuring up the the image of a shifty shady Chinese. I can conjure up images of Triad members and completely protected "dragon chasing dens" and homeless men who lived on cots and dealt drugs in semi-protected Triad territories (that's why Triad kung fu movies are realistic to me) and f@#$ing ass dangerous Chinese thugs, or the sexy bar maids, but on contrary I can also conjure up images of rich tycoons in there Rolls, or cute young Chinese ladies, or older Chinese men and women practicing Tai' Chi in the park or women selling there goods in the open market, or families that lived on junks at Aberdeen, or the normal working man getting home, or the hustling mini bus driver, or all the people who would showed up at Happy Valley horse race track, or the guys playing soccer so violently I would wonder if it was kung fu soccer, or the family who owned the small shop on the main road who would be so appeciative of our business that they would deliver two cases of bottled coke by dolly from a block away directly up to our 7th floor flat. I guess I just have a hard time imagining this sleezy image as you state. And I wonder if the guy writing the article intended such an image. Living in Hong Kong I also knew alot of Americans there. Lots and lots of these people were tremendous individuals, just great poeple with great character. Open minded people, families, people who weren't just curious of other cultures but actually commited to living amongst another culture.
But it also could be me, who see's the stuff (the ridiculous portrayal of Asians) on TV or film and knows it a joke but doesn't give damn cause I have lived in Asia and have an attitude like "it's only TV" or "it's only a movie" and it doesn't mean sH!t. But then again if that Sh!t results in something like the above post about the Asian student then it's f#$ked.
So fight on.
ps. The American School site was just for info. Somebody here may want to teach there and give HK a try. They do take applications for teaching opportunities. I say if it's something some one has the ability to do and a desire to experience something different, Hong Kong is an incredibly intense place. Just visiting there and living there is totally different as in any place in this world. |
