Re: Why 'Joy Luck' Brings Me Misery (Score: 1) by ReBirth on Friday, April 23 @ 15:50:18 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | Well I think it's mainly people not wanting to be defined, as one thing.
It gets dull ya know? It's like that one friend who keeps on trying to get you to tell that same old joke over and over that you're tired of doing.
Or asking a celebrity to constantly say his famous catch phrase.
Or playing the same damn song on the radio 24 hours a day. It may be a damn good song, but I get tired of hearing it.
It doesn't matter what race someone is, everyone wants to not be portrayed as a one set thing. It must get tiring for German people who are always portrayed as uptight Nazis, or techno loving David Hasselhoff fans, right?
And to blame Bruce Lee for Kung Fu? He was just doing his own thing, and I'm glad for that. He tried to define himself as more than a martial artist, but as an actor, and philosopher.
When we get upset about these things, it isn't because we do so just to mess with people. There are real reasons. We just all need to step back and gain some perspective.
But with that said. We define ourselves. I'll open my own doors, and not wait for another person to. We all suffer from hardships that we need to overcome, and before we judge someone else, we should take into consideration people's motivations and hardships. |

We share a lot of similarities, but we all have our differences and geography is a big factor in that.
I'm proud to know Kung Fu and Kung Fu IS something to be proud of, but we are more than that as people especially when it comes to media representation. If I try for a role in a movie, I don't want some casting director to immediately say "...you're here for the Kung Fu part right?". I want to be given an option, I want to be treated as a human being, not a caricature or a stereotype. This goes for life as well. |
