Actually, many Irish have dark or blonde hair - the red hair stereotype is vastly overplayed... Good overall points, tho.

1) Well, half our race is making such "progress..."
2) True.
3) True. There are no other groups to "pass the buck too, tho." Or, aliens?

I guess you make fair points. I would like to add, however, that even when the Irish and Italians were 'picked on,' they were still considered to be and acting like White people.

During and after the Civil War, many Irish people were some of the most virulently anti-African American racists in the North. And for those of us familiar with Chinese American history, the Irish Americans were both the foot soldiers and the leaders (e.g., Dennis Kearney) of the anti-Chinese movement (ranging from lynchings to the Chinese Exclusion Act and similar legislation).

Many Italians played similar roles when it came to non-White racial minorities. I have friends who grow up going to school with Irish and Italian Americans who were mercilously bullied by them for being Asian.

While it's true that the Irish, Italians, etc., were looked down upon by more WASPy White people, they were still considered to be White. The Irish & Italians were picked on for being relatively poor (at least in the distant past) (and in the case of immigrants, unacclimated to the US) and to some extent for Catholicism.

But if it ever came to racial conflict -- where White people decided to attack racial minorities -- there was absolutely NO doubt that the Irish and Italians were White.

As for the three points ... the point about IR seems to be rather silly. An Italian marrying someone of English descent or an Irish person marrying someone of French descent is equivalent to a Chinese person marrying a Japanese person ... it is NOT IR that is going on here with the Irish and Italians because they are White.

As for the point about economic progress, etc. ... I think you need to read Elbert's article again (particularly his last sentence).
