I guess if the problem is White exploitation of an Asian stereotype, I would look at William Hung more as a symptom of a problem rather than a problem in itself.

I don't see anything really productive in us protesting and whining about William Hung - it doesn't really further any real cause and makes the Asian empowerment cause look a little bit irrational.

We can fight the stereotype by complaining about the overt racism that still exists - things that we can easily point out and we can get a majority to rally around. Abercrombie, Details Magazine, etc.

The best thing we can do to make progress in the specific arena of pop music is to make sure Jin and future artists that come along become much bigger stars than William Hung.

Asians need to break through here the same way they broke through in education, in science, and increasingly in business and government - with hard work and real talent. I'm confident that we can make it happen.
