Re: Asian Community Has Double Vision of Eyelid Surgery (Score: 1) by pynchon on Sunday, April 11 @ 13:43:29 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | You seem to be suggesting that Asian festishizing by white people has to do with exoticism. Which suggests that white people would appreciate eyes that are different from theirs, namely the stereotypical Asian eye. Consequently, Asian girls (so you'd seem to say), wouldn't want the surgery
Regardless, I think the article is even-handed in suggesting that there is more than one reason for the eyelid surgery, not just the explaination you're offering. |

Re: Asian Community Has Double Vision of Eyelid Surgery (Score: 1) by Chinamerican on Thursday, July 14 @ 05:39:02 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) | You're kidding right? It may partially have something to do with racism but I really think it's more classism and aesthetics.
The whole "pale skin" thing is a class distinction - workers get dark when they work in the fields so being pale (and having soft feet and/or long fingernails for men) was a sign that one was of a higher class.
The "pale skin" trend also appeared in VICTORIAN ENGLAND so please don't just write it off as "white worship"
Secondly, the article is right - the double lid does indeed make one look more awake. Non-Asians who are already satified w/ their lids get a brow lift (Laura Bush did). Jessica Simpson got the blepharoplasty to make her eyes look bigger and she is abusive with the dark eyeliner and the "smoky" look, which single-lidded ladies often employ to give their eyes more depth:

Bottom line, it's not as simple as "pure" racism. Many people are insecure about how they look b/c of societal pressures.
