High-Tech Coolies According to the Pew Trust, Asian-Americans are one of the most wired groups in America. Fully 75% of English-speaking Asian-American adults have used the Internet. Numbering well over 5 million, these Asian-American Internet users are also the Net’s most active users. By comparison, 58% of white adults, 43% of African-Americans, and 50% of English-speaking Hispanics are online. You can read the full report (PDF format) here.

if there's supposed to be so many AAs online, why is there so little activity in the forums and chat rooms here? :(

Maybe because most visitors are like you and not registering or leaving substantive comments?

Intenalizing myths (Score: 0)

I've read a summary of this report awhile ago. I want to emphasize that data can be interpreted and MISinterpreted in many ways.

One way of MISinterpreting it is to say that Asian-Americans are digitally/technologically successful, thus reinforcing the Model Minority Myth both inside and outside the Asian Pacific Islander group.

What are the age bracket distributions among the various ethnicities?

For Asian Americans, 63% of that group are between the age of 18 and 34. Combined with the fact that 75% of the English-speaking adults have used the internet, this is suggesting that most AA web surfers are young and English-speaking. I am interested in knowing what happened to the non-English speaking adults, which many immigrants might be a part of.

Since this is the first study of its kinda (that I'm aware of), we can't make too many speculations yet. That's why this forum is so quiet. ;-) Kidding aside, I propose this social-model:

A good portion of Asian Americans come from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Let's face it, there aren't a lot of Asian countries that has France's economy or human rights record. The ones that were able to make it to America are the `survivors,` the `cream of the crop by natural selection.` There is a lot of pressure to assimilate, to gain status and to become wealthy. The initial few generations are what I consider `sacrificial lamb` generations; those who work hard to push their children into better life because they have nothing or little to begin with. They don't have time to go on the Internet. They might not even speak English. And many live within close-knit communities with cities.

The succeeding generations WILL speak English and have time to surf the Internet, have college degrees and what not. Our children won't have the same expectations as the initial immigrant/refugee generations did.

What I am proposing is that the Asian American population will in time `normalize.` Right now most of the Internet surfers for AA are young, but as our generations age, the distribution will probably match closer to those of the more-established African-Americans.

And the other ethnic groups will `normalize` closer to our distributions. The fact that 75% of AA surf is not only due to our youthful age, but that many of us live in wired cities. What about the people who live in unwired areas?

The thing I have problem reconciling with is why are there more MALE AA surfing the web than FEMALE AA? Maybe it's because female Asians are so mysterious.
