49ers Owner Goes to Chinatown to Apologize

A repentant San Francisco 49ers owner John York ventured into the heart of Chinatown on Tuesday expecting to be blitzed and pummeled.

And The City's Asian-American community did not let him down.

Two weeks after a 49ers training video mocking gays, Asians and Mayor Gavin Newsom was leaked to the media, York formally apologized to about 150 Asian-American community leaders and residents packed into the Chinese American Citizens Alliance hall.

York, who had already called dozens of Chinatown leaders to apologize, called the video "offensive, tasteless and stupid." He repeatedly said the video neither reflected team values nor the values of the York family. He said he was "struggling" with the fact that the tape was made despite sensitivity training. The creator of the video, former public relations director Kirk Reynolds, has resigned.

"We do have to look at ourselves, we do have to figure out how something like this happened," he said.

Speaker after speaker talked of how the video's stereotypical depiction of Asians as buck-toothed, bespectacled and speaking in broken English reinforced the sort of slurs and taunts that many immigrants, especially children, know well.

In introductory remarks, Yvonne Lee, a community advocate and former U.S. civil rights commissioner, said, "We join together to express our collective outrage."

Asian-American leaders chastised team management for fostering an atmosphere where such a demeaning training video was possible.

"I think what we're talking about is an environment that allowed corporate racism to exist," said Chinatown Community Development Center director Gordon Chin, who said he has been a Niners fan for 50 years.

Monster Cable president and founder Noel Lee, whose company won naming rights to the old Candlestick Park last year, said the tape brought back the "ridicule" he experienced growing up in the Inner Richmond.

"I thought that was behind me until I saw this video," said Lee.

Lance Toma, a Japanese-American gay man who married his partner during last year's gay marriages, said the video had "made a mockery of my life."

Others spoke of the Asian-American community's loyalty to the 49ers, pointing out that the Asian-American vote was instrumental in passing a 1997 $100 million lease-revenue bond issue for a new 49ers stadium.

"I walked precincts on behalf of that effort," said Police Commissioner Doug Chan.

But York also scored points for what Asian-Americans called a direct and honest apology.

"You get an ‘A plus' for confession," the Rev. Norman Fong told York. "Confession is the first step, but the next step is harder. That's repentance."

Supervisor Fiona Ma said the community would work with the team to build better relations.

"The 49ers are part of the San Francisco family, and when a family member does something wrong, we don't disown them," said Ma. "We give them an opportunity to make things right."

What a bunch of bull--this guy has nothing to apologize for. Can't anyone take a joke? This "diversity" nonsense really does seem to take on a lot of cult-like qualities, such as:

(Taken from The Cult Test [www.orange-papers.org])
1. The Guru [in this case diversity-sensitivity enforcer] is always right.
2. You are always wrong.
3. No Exit.
4. No Graduates.
5. Cult-speak.
6. Group-think.
7. Irrationality.
8. Suspension of disbelief.
10. Personal attacks on critics.
11. Insistence that the cult is THE ONLY WAY.
12. The cult and its members are special.
13. Induction of guilt, and the use of guilt to manipulate cult members.
14. Dogma, Unquestionable Dogma, and Sacred Science. (see esp. horse s*** like "race does not exist")
16. Appeals to "holy" or "wise" authorities.
19. Surrender To The Cult.
21. Personal testimonies of earlier converts.
22. The cult is self-absorbed.
26. No Humor. The nonsense in this post is a perfect example of this.
27. You can't tell the truth. See isteve.com
28. Cloning -- You must redefine yourself and your life in cult terms.
29. You must change your beliefs to conform to the group's beliefs.
30. The End Justifies The Means.
31. Dishonesty, Deceit, Denial, Falsification, and Rewriting History. Rather than seeing the early U.S. as positive and innovative, especially compared to non-NW Euro cultures at the time, constant focus on wrongs (especially those related to race)
32. Different Levels of Truth.
33. Newcomers can't think right.
34. The Cult Implants Phobias.
35. The Cult is Money-Grubbing.
36. Confession Sessions. The situation in this article could hardly be a better example of this.
37. A System of Punishments and Rewards. Again the situation in this article seems to reflect this pretty well...
38. An Impossible Superhuman Model of Perfection.
40. Intrusiveness.
43. Create a sense of powerlessness, covert fear, guilt, and dependency.
45. Ideology Over Experience, Observation, and Logic
46. Keep them unaware that there is an agenda to change them
47. Thought-Stopping Language. Thought-terminating clichés and slogans.
49. The guru or the group demands ultra-loyalty and total committment.
50. Demands for Total Faith and Total Trust
51. Members Get No Respect. They Get Abused. The "over-priviledged" can constantly grovel about their wrongs to the "under-prividged" but this is never good enough
52. Inconsistency. Contradictory Messages
53. Hierarchical, Authoritarian Power Structure, and Social Castes
54. Front groups, masquerading recruiters, hidden promoters, and disguised propagandists
55. Belief equals truth
56. Use of double-binds
57. The cult leader is not held accountable for his actions. (replace "cult leader" with diversity-enforcer, such as the EEOC or leftist media)
58. Everybody else needs the guru to boss him around, but nobody bosses the guru around.
59. The guru criticizes everybody else, but nobody criticizes the guru.

"Diversity sensitivity" training, anyone?
60. Dispensed truth and social definition of reality
62. Flexible, shifting morality
63. Separatism
64. Inability to tolerate criticism
66. Calls to Obliterate SelfThe overpriviged, whether the U.S. as a country, whites, men, or "the rich" should be willing to give up everything for "justice."
67. Don't Trust Your Own Mind.
69. The cult takes over the individual's decision-making process.
70. You Owe The Group. Or in this case, the groups that the Left is supposedly fighting for

If you don't believe me, check

Sigh

The chinese community should've REALLY let York have in terms of ridicules and should financially hurt him in terms 49er sales.

Another reason in this country we have CCB AF/AM sellouts especially women, self hate and internalized racism runs too deep in our community.

I agree with this part of the story:

"You get an ‘A plus' for confession," the Rev. Norman Fong told York. "Confession is the first step, but the next step is harder. That's repentance."

I *do* give him an A for going to the heart of Chinatown to get verbally killed....we as AAs should all at least acknowledge that that action (of standing up and taking public responsibility in OUR house) is better than most business leaders would do.

BUT NOW:

It's about action. We, as a community, need to HELP him by identifying what concrete actions he can take to fix the problem.

-- Hire a full-time, well-paid, locally-repected AA leader to be the team's liaison with the AA community.

-- Continuing, mandatory, training for all staff on these issues.

-- Hire Norm Chow in some capacity! (grin).

-- Feature AAs prominently in all team commercials and media announcements (billboards, print ads, stadium art, etc).

That would be a good start.

Chinese American Citizens Alliance
Hosts Meeting Between Asian Community
and the San Francisco Forty Niners

On June 1, 2005, Dr. John York and Denise DeBartolo York, owners of the San Francisco Forty Niners issued an apology for the training camp video, which offended Asian Americans by its racial stereotyping content and denigrated groups because of their sexual orientation. On June 2, 2005, the Yorks issued another apology for another earlier tasteless training video.

Dr. York, Ed Goines, and David Pierce of the 49ers organization have planned a meeting for the Asian American community to voice their grievances and concerns. To give both parties an opportunity for dialogue, the Chinese American Citizens Alliance is making available the Auditorium of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Grand Lodge Headquarters at 1044 Stockton Street in San Francisco for the meeting on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 from 11 AM - 1 PM.

Saykin Foo, National President of the Alliance, the oldest Asian American civil rights and advocacy organization, has named two representatives to express the views of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance at the meeting. Faye Woo Lee, Assistant Secretary of the national board and a member of the Human Rights Commission of San Francisco and Lawrence Wong, Special Assistant to the President and member of the Board of Trustees of City College of San Francisco will participate on behalf of the 110-year old organization.

About a hundred key influential members of commissions, boards, and community-based organizations from the Bay Area are expected to attend.

National President Saykin Foo sent the following letter on June 10, 2005 to Dr. and Mrs. York, owners of the San Francisco Forty Niners:

John York, M.D. and Denise DeBartolo York
San Francisco Forty Niners
Marie P. DeBartolo Sports Centre

Santa Clara, CA, 95054

Dear Dr. and Mrs. York,

As President of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance, established in 1895 in San Francisco and dedicated to civil rights and advocacy issues throughout the United States, I join others in expressing both shock and outrage at the racist and homophobic stereotypes that were depicted by not just the first 49er video but also the second one that has surfaced. The shock is that the 49ers, based as we are in the Bay Area, with its rich and previously respected traditions, would go to the lengths of evoking our outrage by producing material that is clearly and inexcusably intended to denigrate specific groups by virtue of their ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Whatever the intended objective of this material, it unquestionably failed. It only succeeded to perpetuate the negative images that some in society continue to hold against particular groups. While you and the 49er organization are to be commended for quickly issuing apologies and denials of knowledge of this material, it is in reality not as simple as that. Subsequent comments by many of your own players are evidence that they still don¹t get it. Regardless of whether this material was produced for "in house" use, there are probably many hate organizations in this country that have produced plenty of vile and offensive material for "in house" use. But that is not what we expected from the 49ers!

Whether you as 49er owners, staff, coaches or players accept the idea that the public wants you to be role models, it is by default. Your public status requires that you accept the role and be more resp

Why would Yvonne Lee, a community advocate and former U.S. civil rights commissioner, say that she thought this "was all behind" her? Racism exists. It is built into the structure and fabric of our society. Surely, she is aware of that. I think this points to the fact that sometimes folks of color get too smug and assume that the little progress we have made is a signal that there is no racism anymore; that it is part of the distant past.
